Staff Favourites – Carte De Visite Album

Carte de Visite Album

Research and theatre history buff Patricia Convery relishes her role as the Research Co-ordinator for the Performing Arts Collection Research Centre; a job she has had for over six years.

Through her work, Patricia has come across many of the Collection’s thousands of treasures. One of her personal favourites is a beautiful leather-bound, brass studded and embossed album of calling cards featuring Australian and international performers of the second half of the 19th Century.

“For a student of theatrical history this album, known as a ‘Carte de Visite’, represents an exciting record of a period of 19th century theatre in Australia” said Patricia. “It shows the diversity of performance that was on offer at this time and illustrates just how robust the theatrical and entertainment scene was in Australia.”

This very rare 19th century resource was spotted in 1992 at a second hand Greville St bookstore and has been a prize possession of the Collection ever since.
